myers_07.jpgDr. Jerry Myers begins his tenth year this fall on the faculty of the Washington and Lee University Music Department. He served for nine years as the Associate Director of Choral Activities. Recently, he was appointed the Acting Director of Choral Activities in which he will conduct the Chamber Singers and University Chorus.

He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Master of Arts in Choral Conducting and Music Education from Western Illinois University and Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Illinois State University.

In addition to conducting, Dr. Myers teaches courses including Applied Voice, Fundamentals of Voice, three levels of Sight-Singing/Ear-Training, Intermediate Choral Conducting, and a seminar on The Human Voice. In demand as a festival adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor, he conducted locally the All-County Middle School & High School Choruses for Botetourt.

As a Music Director or Vocal Coach, he has worked on numerous productions for academic and professional theaters, including Grease, Little Shop of Horrors, Company, Working, The Pirates of Penzance, Kiss Me, Kate and numerous revues. His stage credits include roles in Bye, Bye, Birdie, The King & I, Once Upon A Mattress, Guys & Dolls, La Traviata, L’Eisir d’Amore, La Boheme and Sweeney Todd.

Under his direction, the University Chorus has collaborated with leading conductors and soloists, premiered works by international composers, and performed with professional ensembles from Virginia to Germany. They have appeared in the prestigious venues of Austria, Italy, the Scandinavian Region, Germany, and Cuba. In the spring of 2009, Dr. Myers will take the helm as artistic director and conductor for an international choral festival in South Africa; the University Chorus will form as the core ensemble for performances with choirs from several countries.

Dr. Myers’ professional affiliations include the American Choral Directors Association (State officer), National Association of Teachers of Singing, College Music Society, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He lives in Botetourt County, VA with is wife Laura, a Board Certified Music Therapist, and daughter, Ella.
