University Chamber Singers and the Rockbridge Choral Society
Once again, the University Chamber Singers, under the
direction of
Dr. Gordon Spice will combine forces with the Rockbridge Choral
Society, conducted by William McCorkle, to present a choral masterwork.
Bach’s St.
Matthew Passion
will be performed with Baroque orchestra in two performances, Saturday,
March 17, at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday, March 18, at 3 p.m.
Tickets are required and

Catherine Swan, a senior music major
from
Niceville, Fla., and Lisa Zevorich, a senior history major from Munroe
Falls, Ohio, present an evening of classical and popular vocal music.
This recital is a culmination of four years of voice study at
W&L
for Swan and Zevorich.

One of the leading pianists of his generation, Marc-André
Hamelin has
explored an eclectic range of composers from Alkan to Villa-Lobos, with
over three-dozen recordings on the Hyperion label. His recording of the
complete Godowsky Studies on Chopin’s Études won the 2000 Gramophone
Istru-mental Award. Hamelin’s latest project is a double album of
Albeniz’s Iberia and España. His program at Washington and Lee will
include Haydn’s Sonata in B minor, Chopin’s Sonata in B minor and the
complete Book II of Debussy Preludes.

Monty Alexander (born Montgomery Bernard Alexander on June 6, 1944 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a Jamaican pianist and melodica player. His playing has a strong Caribbean influence and swinging feeling, but he has also been influenced by Wynton Kelly, Art Tatum, Gene Harris and Ahmad Jamal.
By grafting the traditions of American jazz to his authentic Jamaican roots, pianist Monty Alexander has spent a lifetime exploring the rich depths of musical and cultural diversity. In a career that spans more than four decades, he has performed and/or recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe: Frank Sinatra, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare and many more.
This
performance repeats the exciting repertoire of the Fall Choral Concert.
