Sat, Mar 17th 2007 University Chamber Singers and the Rockbridge Choral Society University Chorus Once again, the University Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Gordon Spice will combine forces with the Rockbridge Choral Society, conducted by William McCorkle, to present a choral masterwork. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion will be performed with Baroque orchestra in two performances, Saturday, March 17, at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday, March 18, at 3 p.m.

Tickets are required and are available at McCorkle's Hallmark Store, 463-9491.  Tickets CANNOT be purchased at the Lenfest box office or on the Lenfest website.

Tue, Apr 3rd 2007 University Chorus  Join conductor Jerry Myers as he leads the 60-member University Chorus and its Tour Choir in a pre-tour concert. Featuring works by American and German composers from the Baroque to contemporary, this concert features a performance of one of Bach’s magnificent cantatas. Wish the touring singers well before they embark on a 10-day performance tour of Frankfurt, Munich and Leipzig, Germany!

Tue, May 8th 2007 Senior Voice Recital: Lisa Zevorich '07 and Catherine Swan '07 Catherine Swan, a senior music major from Niceville, Fla., and Lisa Zevorich, a senior history major from Munroe Falls, Ohio, present an evening of classical and popular vocal music. This recital is a culmination of four years of voice study at W&L for Swan and Zevorich.

Otherwise he would never have allowed William Shakespeare, The Bard of the 16th Century,  to cooperate so delightfully, deliciously, and so delovely with Cole Porter, The Baud of the 20th Century for the creation of Kiss Me, Kate - a rib of The Taming of the Shrew.  It’s just TOO DARN HOT of a concept to turn down. “So brush Up Your Shakespeare” and get ready  for “Another Op’nin’ ”  in our second season of the Robert O. and Elizabeth M. Bentley Endowment for the Performing Arts Musical Event.

Tue, Oct 9th 2007 Marc-André Hamelin Marc-Andre HamelinOne of the leading pianists of his generation, Marc-André Hamelin has explored an eclectic range of composers from Alkan to Villa-Lobos, with over three-dozen recordings on the Hyperion label. His recording of the complete Godowsky Studies on Chopin’s Études won the 2000 Gramophone Istru-mental Award. Hamelin’s latest project is a double album of Albeniz’s Iberia and España. His program at Washington and Lee will include Haydn’s Sonata in B minor, Chopin’s Sonata in B minor and the complete Book II of Debussy Preludes.

Monty Alexander TrioMonty Alexander (born Montgomery Bernard Alexander on June 6, 1944 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a Jamaican pianist and melodica player. His playing has a strong Caribbean influence and swinging feeling, but he has also been influenced by Wynton Kelly, Art Tatum, Gene Harris and Ahmad Jamal.

By grafting the traditions of American jazz to his authentic Jamaican roots, pianist Monty Alexander has spent a lifetime exploring the rich depths of musical and cultural diversity. In a career that spans more than four decades, he has performed and/or recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe: Frank Sinatra, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare and many more.
